Joey Derus Biography

Joey Derus (Chum Spice) was born in Chicago on June 27, 1969. He grew up on the Northwest side of Chicago. Although he tried hard to hide from it, music found Joey when he was a boy. With FreezeDried, Joey can be seen playing Guitar and Trumpet and on vocals. Someday you may ask Joey, “Joey, how many bands have you played in”. Joey’s response would be, “As many as possible.”

He has arranged and written many songs throughout his musical career. Songs he has written include: Sweet Mary; At The Bus Stop; Shakespeare's Waltz; Once Again Tonight; Maybe It's Just You and I; Seventh Yellow Sun; Ordinary Joe; Reggae Dancing; Magic Box; and Strawberries In The Kitchen.

With FreezeDried, Joey can be seen playing Guitar and trumpet. He also sings many lead and backup vocals. FreezeDried's band concept was Joey's inspiration.
